Vocational Aptitude: Primary 1, First Term Lesson Notes – Week 4

Topic: Career Opportunities
Class Level: Primary 1
Term: First Term
Week: 4
Age Range: 5–6 years
Duration: 40 minutes


1. Behavioral Objectives

By the end of this lesson, pupils should be able to:

  • Understand the concept of a career.

  • Recognize at least five different careers and the professionals who do them.

  • Identify the job responsibilities of professionals in various fields.


2. Key Terms and Definitions

  • Career – A job or profession that a person does for a long time, after being trained in that field.

  • Professionals – People who are trained and qualified to do a specific job.

  • Opportunity – A chance for something to happen or to be done.

  • Occupation – The job or work a person is engaged in.


3. Set Induction

Teacher: “Good morning, Superstars! Can anyone tell me what you want to be when you grow up?”

  • Jide: “I want to be a pilot!”

  • Adaora: “I want to be a teacher like you!”

  • Teacher: “Wonderful! Those are all great careers. Today, we’re going to learn more about different careers people can have and the special jobs they do.”


4. Entry Behaviour

Pupils are familiar with seeing people in their community doing various jobs, such as teachers, drivers, and bakers. They may have heard parents or guardians talk about their work and might have their own ideas about what they want to do when they grow up.


5. Materials Needed for the Lesson

  • Flashcards with pictures of various professionals (doctor, driver, teacher, baker, etc.)

  • Real-life objects related to careers (e.g., a small carpenter’s tool, a mini doctor’s stethoscope, or a toy chef’s hat)

  • Whiteboard and markers


6. Background Knowledge

Children live in communities where they observe people doing different types of work. This lesson builds on their existing understanding of work, such as seeing a teacher at school or a driver on the road, and helps them expand their knowledge to include a variety of careers.


7. Embedded Core Skills

  • Communication: Pupils will express their ideas and listen to others.

  • Critical Thinking: Pupils will think about how different careers help the community.

  • Cooperation: Working together in activities to identify careers and their professionals.


8. Main Content

What is a Career?
A career is a job or occupation that someone chooses to do for a long time, usually after receiving training. It is a profession that helps a person earn a living and contribute to society. For example, a teacher is trained to teach children in school, and a doctor is trained to help sick people feel better.

There are many types of career opportunities available to people depending on their skills, interests, and training. Below are some examples of careers, the professionals in these fields, and what they do:

  1. Acting

    • Professional: Actor

    • Job they do: Acts in plays or movies to entertain people.

  2. Accounting

    • Professional: Accountant

    • Job they do: Prepares accounts and keeps track of money for businesses or individuals.

  3. Architecture

    • Professional: Architect

    • Job they do: Designs and plans buildings.

  4. Archaeology

    • Professional: Archaeologist

    • Job they do: Studies ancient cultures by examining old artifacts and sites.

  5. Auditing

    • Professional: Auditor

    • Job they do: Examines and prepares accounts to ensure everything is correct.

  6. Baking

    • Professional: Baker

    • Job they do: Bakes bread, cakes, and other delicious foods.

  7. Barbing

    • Professional: Barber

    • Job they do: Cuts hair and provides grooming services.

  8. Bricklaying

    • Professional: Bricklayer

    • Job they do: Lays bricks to build houses and other buildings.

  9. Butchering

    • Professional: Butcher

    • Job they do: Cuts and packages meat for sale.

  10. Catering

    • Professional: Caterer

    • Job they do: Cooks for large groups of people, especially for events like weddings or parties.

  11. Carpentry

    • Professional: Carpenter

    • Job they do: Builds and repairs things made of wood, like furniture or houses.

  12. Driving

    • Professional: Driver

    • Job they do: Drives cars, buses, or trucks to transport people or goods.


9.Classroom Story: “The Adventures of Adebisi the Caterer”

Adebisi, a caterer from Amuwo Odofin, wakes up early every morning to prepare for her day of cooking. She has a large pot of soup bubbling on the stove as she stirs it carefully. “The secret to making the best soup,” she says with a wink, “is using fresh ingredients and lots of love!”

One day, Adebisi was asked to cater for a big party in the neighborhood. As she was cooking, little Kemi from the party came running to ask, “Auntie, why do you always cook for everyone?”

Adebisi smiled and replied, “Well, my dear, cooking is my job, and it makes me happy when I see everyone enjoying the food I prepare. It’s what I do best!”

When the party guests sat down to eat, they all praised Adebisi for her delicious dishes. Adebisi was proud of her work. “No job is too small,” she said to Kemi, “especially when it helps others feel good.”


Class Discussion:

Teacher: “Now, children, let’s talk about the careers you’ve heard of. Can anyone tell me what their mommy or daddy does for a living?”

Jibola : “My mommy works in a bank. She helps people keep their money safe.”

Teacher: “That’s wonderful! Your mommy is an important part of keeping the money in the bank safe.”

Temidayo “My daddy is a driver. He drives a bus that takes people to work.”

Teacher: “Excellent, Temidayo! Your daddy is helping people get to work safely.”

A career is an individual’s metaphorical “journey” through learning, work and other aspects of life. There are a number of ways to define career and the

Teacher: “Now let’s talk about the jobs people in your family or community do. What job do you think you would like to do when you grow up?”

  • Adaora: “I want to be a doctor because I want to help sick people feel better.”

  • Ibrahim: “I want to be a driver like my uncle. He drives a bus.”

  • Teacher: “Those are both great ideas! A doctor helps people get better, and a driver helps people travel from one place to another.”


11. Activity – Fill-in-the-Blank (Multiple Choice)
