By the end of the lesson, the pupils should be able to:

  1. Say what electrical appliances are in their own words.

  2. Mention at least 5 electrical home appliances.

  3. Say what each appliance is used for at home.

  4. Describe how to use electrical appliances safely.

  5. Share examples of appliances they’ve seen at home or school.

  • Electricity – The power that makes lights and machines work.

  • Appliance – A machine we use at home to do work.

  • Electrical Appliance – A machine that uses electricity to work.

  • Switch – A small button that turns something ON or OFF.

  • Plug – A tool that connects appliances to electricity.


11. Set Induction (Classroom Drama Begins!)

Teacher: “Children, what makes the fan blow and the TV talk?”
Pupil (shouting): “Electricity!”
Teacher: “So if NEPA, I mean PHCN as they are now called takes light, can your mummy boil water in the electric kettle?”
Pupil: “Nooo, ma! She’ll be angry o!”
Teacher: “Why?”
Pupil: “Because her water will be cold and she can’t make tea again!”
(Everyone laughs)
Teacher: “Exactly! Today we are going to learn about those special things in our homes that need electricity to work.”

The teacher asks: “What do you see at home that makes noise, moves, or shines when there’s light?”
Pupils respond: “Fan,” “Television,” “Iron,” “Fridge!”

  • Chart showing “Before Electricity” vs “With Electricity”

Electric Stove Cooks food without fire

Safety Tips for Using Electrical Appliances

  • Don’t touch with wet hands

  • Don’t put metal objects inside them

  • Don’t play with sockets or wires

  • Always ask an adult to help

  • Turn OFF appliances after use

Little Kemi saw her baby sister trying to touch the electric socket. She shouted, “Stop! That is not safe!” Mummy rushed in, smiled at Kemi and said, “You’re a smart girl. Electricity is helpful, but it can also hurt.”

Teacher pauses: “So class, should we play with sockets?”
Pupils (loudly): “No maaa!”
