Understanding the Parts of Speech in English

By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:
- Explain the meaning of parts of speech.
- Identify common parts of speech in simple sentences.
- Correctly use at least five parts of speech in their own sentences.
- Distinguish between nouns, verbs, adjectives, pronouns, and conjunctions.

Entry Behaviour
Pupils can already form simple sentences and name objects, actions, and people.
Set Induction (Introduction – 5 minutes)
The teacher writes this sentence on the board:
Aisha happily carried her bag to school.
Pupils are asked:
- Who is mentioned?
- What action is taking place?
- How was the action done?
The teacher explains that each word in the sentence has a job, and these jobs are called parts of speech.
Meaning of Parts of Speech
Parts of speech are groups or classes of words based on the work they do in a sentence.
Types of Parts of Speech
1. Noun
A noun is the name of a person, place, animal, or thing.
Examples:
- Teacher
- Lagos
- Dog
- Book
Sentence:
The teacher entered the classroom.
2. Pronoun
A pronoun is a word used in place of a noun.
Examples:
- He
- She
- It
- They
- We
Sentence:
Aisha is my friend. She is very kind.
3. Verb
A verb is an action word or a doing word.
Examples:
- Run
- Eat
- Write
- Sing
Sentence:
The pupils read their books.
4. Adjective
An adjective is a word that describes a noun.
Examples:
- Big
- Small
- Beautiful
- Intelligent
Sentence:
She wore a beautiful dress.
5. Adverb
An adverb tells us how, when, or where an action is done.
Examples:
- Quickly
- Slowly
- Yesterday
- Here
Sentence:
He answered the question correctly.
6. Preposition
A preposition shows the position of a noun or pronoun.
Examples:
- On
- Under
- In
- Behind
Sentence:
The book is on the table.
7. Conjunction
A conjunction joins words, phrases, or sentences.
Examples:
- And
- But
- Because
- Or
Sentence:
I wanted to go out, but it was raining.
