English Language Lesson Plan – Week 1 (Phonics: Animal Sounds)

Topic: Phonics (Animal Sounds)

Sub-topic: Simple Greetings and Commands

Duration: 40 minutes


Behavioural Objectives

By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

  1. Identify the sounds made by common animals.
  2. Match animals to the correct sounds they make.
  3. Respond correctly to simple greetings and commands.
  4. Use simple words like Good morning, Good afternoon, and Good night correctly.
  5. Follow short classroom commands such as Put your book on the table.

Keyword Meaning (Simplified for Kids)
Phonics The sounds that letters and words make.
Animal A living creature like a lion, cat, or dog.
Sound What we hear when something makes a noise.
Roar The loud sound made by a lion.
Bark The sound a dog makes.
Hiss The sound a snake makes.
Trumpet The sound made by an elephant.
Greeting A polite word we say when we meet someone.
Command An instruction or order we follow.
Morning The early part of the day after we wake up.

Set Induction (Attention-Grabbing Story)

Teacher tells a short story:

“Children, once upon a time in the Lagos Zoo, a boy named Tobi heard different sounds. Roar! went the lion. Hiss! went the snake. Trumpet! went the elephant. Tobi laughed because every animal spoke in its own way. Let’s learn what each animal says today!”

Teacher imitates animal sounds with expressions and gestures. Pupils repeat and laugh.

The pupils can already recognize common animals like lion, cat, dog, and snake from pictures and stories.

  • Blackboard and chalk

Building Background / Connection to Prior Knowledge

Teacher reminds the pupils that animals live around us and each has a special sound. Pupils are asked:

“What sound does a dog make?”
“Have you heard a hen before?”

This activates their prior listening experience.

A. Phonics – Animal Sounds

Animals make different sounds.
Let’s learn a few examples:

Animal Sound Example Sentence
Lion Roars The lion roars loudly.
Dog Barks The dog barks at strangers.
Cat Mews The cat mews softly.
Snake Hisses The snake hisses when angry.
Elephant Trumpets The elephant trumpets with its trunk.
Goat Bleats The goat bleats when hungry.
Cow Moos The cow moos in the field.
Hen Clucks The hen clucks when laying eggs.
Frog Croaks The frog croaks at night.
Sheep Baa The sheep says baa on the farm.

B. Structure – Simple Greetings and Commands

Teacher’s Activities

  1. Display animal pictures and ask pupils to name them.
  2. Play animal sounds and let pupils guess which animal made each sound.
  3. Write words like roar, bark, hiss on the board.
  4. Teach greetings through call-and-response (e.g., “Good morning, children!” “Good morning, teacher!”).
  5. Give commands for pupils to act out.
