Topic: Phonics (Pronunciation of Q–T Words)

Sub-topic: Reading — Answering Oral and Written Questions

Behavioural Objectives

By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

  1. Pronounce Q–T words correctly.
  2. Identify and read words beginning with Q, R, S, and T.
  3. Comprehend and answer simple questions from a short story.
  4. Recognize basic sentence patterns and respond accurately.
  5. Build vocabulary through reading and pronunciation practice.

Keywords and Meanings

Keyword Meaning
Phonics The sound of letters in words.
Pronunciation The way a word is spoken.
Question A sentence that asks something.
Answer A response to a question.
Read To look at and understand written words.
Word A group of letters that makes meaning.
Story A short tale about people or animals.
Gift Something given freely.
Cage A structure made of bars to keep birds or animals.
Strange Something unusual or not familiar.

Set Induction (Warm-Up Story)

Teacher narrates:

“One day, my neighbour bought a talking parrot. The parrot could say ‘Good morning!’ and ‘How are you?’ But when I visited her one evening, the parrot started speaking another language! Everyone laughed. The children loved to visit just to hear the parrot talk.”

Ask the pupils:

  • “Have you ever seen or heard a talking bird?”
  • “What would you name your parrot if you had one?”

This short story prepares them for reading comprehension and pronunciation practice.


Entry Behaviour

Pupils have already learned how to identify and pronounce letters A–P in previous lessons. They can also form simple two-letter words and recognize beginning letter sounds.

  • Pictures of parrot, king, cage, queen, teacher

Building Background / Connection to Prior Knowledge

Pupils have learned how to read and pronounce earlier letters (A–P). Now, they will extend that knowledge to Q–T words and use comprehension to answer questions from a short story.

CONTENT

A. Phonics Practice — Q to T Words

Pupils learn to pronounce and identify words beginning with each letter.

Letter Example Words
Q Queen, Quarrel
R Rat, Racket
S Snail, Sun
T Table, Teacher

Activity: Pupils repeat after the teacher and write two words each that begin with Q, R, S, and T.


B. Reading Passage

Title: The King’s Parrot

King Adeyemi had a parrot. It was a gift from an old woman in the next village. A golden cage was made for the parrot. The parrot spoke a strange language that the king didn’t understand.


C. Comprehension Questions

  1. Who had a parrot?
    (a) King Adeyemi  (b) Teacher (c) King Shola
  2. The parrot was a _________.
    (a) gift (b) money (c) problem
  3. A _______ cage was made for the parrot.
    (a) golden (b) red (c) green

Teacher’s Activities

  1. Revise sounds from letters M–P.
  2. Introduce the new sounds Q–T.
  3. Lead pronunciation drills using flashcards.
  4. Read the passage aloud to pupils.
  5. Ask guided comprehension questions.
  6. Correct pupils’ pronunciation and responses.

Learners’ Activities

  1. Listen and repeat the pronunciation of words.
  2. Write two examples for each letter.
  3. Read the passage aloud in groups.
  4. Answer comprehension questions orally and in writing.
  5. Identify new words and their meanings.

6. What sound does “Q” make? /kw/ as in queen.
7. What sound does “R” make? /r/ as in rat.
8. What sound does “S” make? /s/ as in sun.
9. What sound does “T” make? /t/ as in table.
10. What should we do when we read? Pronounce words clearly.

Conclusion

The teacher revises the lesson, guides pupils to pronounce words correctly, marks classwork, and gives constructive feedback. Pupils practice reading aloud at home.
