Previous Knowledge
Pupils have learnt how to write simple paragraphs about themselves, their families and familiar places.
Set Induction
Show pupils a map or picture of Nigeria and ask: “What is the name of this country? What do you like about Nigeria?” Allow a few pupils to share their answers. Explain that today they will learn how to turn their ideas about Nigeria into a clear composition.
Lesson Presentation
Step 1: What to Include in “My Country”
Explain that a good composition about a country can include its name, location, capital city, people, languages, culture, occupations, natural resources and the writer’s hopes for the country.
Step 2: Organising the Composition
Teach pupils to arrange their ideas in three simple parts:
- Introduction: introduce Nigeria and give basic information about the country.
- Body: describe its people, culture, occupations, resources and other important features.
- Conclusion: state why you love your country and your hopes for its future.

My Country
My country is Nigeria. Nigeria is a country in West Africa. It is a diverse country with many different ethnic groups, languages and cultures. The capital city of Nigeria is Abuja, while Lagos is an important commercial city.
Nigeria is blessed with hardworking people who engage in different occupations such as farming, trading, teaching, fishing and civil service. The country also has natural resources that contribute to its economy. Nigerians enjoy different foods, festivals, music and traditional customs.
I love Nigeria because it is my home. I want Nigeria to be peaceful, united and prosperous. I hope that every Nigerian will work together to make our country a better place for everyone.
Useful Writing Tips for Pupils
- Begin each sentence with a capital letter.
- Use full stops, commas and other punctuation correctly.
- Keep each main idea in a suitable paragraph.
- Avoid repeating the same sentence too many times.
- Read your work again and correct spelling mistakes before submitting it.
Classwork
Write a composition of at least four paragraphs titled “My Country”. Use the outline discussed in class.

Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Writing one very long paragraph instead of separating ideas.
- Using lower-case letters at the beginning of sentences and proper nouns.
- Leaving out punctuation marks.
- Listing facts without connecting them into sentences.
- Copying the sample instead of expressing personal ideas.
Assessment
Assess pupils’ work using these simple points: organisation of ideas, sentence construction, correct spelling, punctuation, paragraphing and originality.
Conclusion
Review the meaning of composition writing and remind pupils that a good composition has organised ideas, clear sentences and a proper beginning, middle and ending. Encourage pupils to use facts they know while expressing their own ideas in simple English.
